Learn about the amazing species that call this unique prairie region their home. Guided walks will highlight the diversity of the prairie landscape from bees and birds to wildflowers and trees and see examples of prairie management. There are a number of plant and animal species that are listed under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. While it’s too late in the season to spot the endangered Poweshiek Skipperling flitting about, you will likely see threatened Riddell’s goldenrod in bloom. Many native prairie plants have adapted to the harsh growing conditions of a mid-continent environment with extreme summer and winter temperatures and unpredictable rainfall. Learn how using native plants you can turn your yard into a native lawn during a presentation by Ash Burkowski of Northern Wildscapes Plants+Design. If you are interested in foraging and preparing wild edibles, Laura Reeves from Prairie Shore Botanicals, will talk about her experiences to help you get started on your own wild edible adventures. Finally, Kara Parkinson with the Gerhard Center’s Forest and Nature School, will talk about connecting children to nature and how this program engages them to bring an appreciation for the natural environment around them.
